Note to Putin: Don’t Even Think About It

Don't Tempt Him.

So several countries sharing a border with Russia are preparing for war on the theory that once Putin is done with Ukraine, other nations are bound to follow. One of those is Finland (see Finland accelerates preparedness for war in all forms by Shona Murray in Euro.news) and another is Poland (see Poland prepares for war by Rob Schmitz and Greg Dixon on the NPR website.)

As is clear from both articles, the two countries are quite serious about fighting back. And remember, both nations fought wars of independence with Russia – Finland twice (The Winter War and the Continuation War), and Poland in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-1921. In both cases, these much smaller European nations did remarkably well against their much larger rival.

So, note to Putin. Don’t think about an invasion of either Poland, or Finland, or anywhere else in Western Europe. You didn’t do well in your initial invasion of Ukraine. You are still not doing terribly well there. And, yes, you’ve learned a lot over the last few years, but so has everyone else. We’ve all learned the lessons of this new kind of war – the importance of drones, cyberwarfare, social media, etc. –  and we know how to apply them.

Therefore, here’s a word of advice. Yes, Trump, that repulsive lickspittle, has given you the green light to do what you like in Europe. But he’s not the only factor to consider. Finland, Poland, plus the whole of NATO, are fully capable of hurting you badly.

So badly, in fact, that even a victory might seem Pyrrhic at best, and an abject disaster at worst.

Gold Rush!

Just in case you’re interested in such things, Gold is booming. Its price has been on the rise for weeks now. Or to put it another way, the value of the US dollar has gone down in relation to the yellow metal.

Why? Well, now, isn’t it obvious? Trump and Musk and co. came along with their “reforms” and “cost cutting measures” and began the happy process of screwing up the American economy. Investors are fleeing currencies (particularly the dollar) and stocks (particularly American stocks) for gold, whose value is something you can count on.

Let’s stress that again. Gold. Not cryptocurrency. Not the dollar. Gold.

So, gee, thanks, Trumpsters. You’ve managed to bring home to us all where real value is to be found. And, guess what? It isn’t in Trumpcoin…or anything like it.

4D Chess, Occam’s Razor, and the April Fool

So there was recently an interesting article in the Atlantic, The Wild Trump Theory Making the Rounds on Wall Street: QAnon for tariffs by RogĂ© Karma. In it, Mr. Karma notes that among Wall Street insiders, there is a weird conspiracy theory circulating that Trump’s apparently insane antics about tariffs are actually planned and highly rational. The idea is that Trump is using his clownish behavior to drive other nations toward an agreement by which America would profit greatly.

Mr. Karma is not impressed by the theory and suspects that Trump’s clownishness is the result of his being just, well, a clown.

I tend to follow Karma’s lead on this. Though, you always do wonder, could there really be more here than meets the eye. Could Trump actually be a brilliant tactician who’s just playing the fool to lure his enemies to their doom? It is certainly what his supporters have said many times in the past. They imply that he’s playing 4D chess and simply looking like he’s a nutcase. And you have to admit, so far Trump’s been far more successful than he has any right to be.

Upon reflection, though, I think that we can dispense with the theory that he’s a genius in disguise. Occam’s Razor suggests that the simplest explanation is often the right one, and so if a person appears to be a raging, narcissistic idiot…well, then…that is probably what he is.

Or, to put it another way, this particular April Fool is just exactly that. I.e., a fool, in April or any other month.

Stagflation, the economy that dare not speak its name

Here’s an interesting article on CNN’s website, So, what is stagflation, anyway, and why is it so scary?  by Elisabeth Buchwald. In it, Ms. Buchwald first defines “stagflation” – which is the dangerous condition that occurs when prices are increasing but the economy does not grow – and then explains why the Federal Reserve is trying very hard not to use the term. It seems that the markets are starting to show signs of stagflation (mostly because of Trump’s tariffs and other dumbass measures), but the Fed won’t use the terms for fear of spooking the markets even more than they are spooked already.

But, let us admit it. Stagflation is coming and it may be the new norm. That’s because under Trump, the public regulation of corporations is going to be largely jettisoned. That means that we’ll see more monopolies. Which means in turn that businesses will be able to increase prices without restraint while having no motivation to innovate or otherwise undertake the sort of investments that would grow the economy. In other words, all the conditions for permanent and universal Stagflation are present and obvious.

Thus, if we are honest and foresighted, we will say that despite the Fed’s best efforts, Stagflation is the future…whether the Fed says the word or not. And that’s because it is at the very heart of the Trump/billionaires’ program for the economy. And it is not an accident.

Rather it, like the impoverishment of the middle class, is a goal. Part of the plan…

To extract all that can be extracted from our wallets. And giving ever less – eventually nothing – in return.

"Who Will Protect Us From Our Protectors?"

Interesting article in the magazine Dissent, “Trump’s Antisocial State” by Melinda Cooper. In it, Ms. Cooper looks at the ways Trump and his minions are transforming the American government and comes to some distressing conclusions.

As everyone knows, or should know, the government of the mid-twentieth century (after FDR) at least tried to make things a bit better for the average American. It was redistributive, meaning it took a small percentage of the wealth of the very rich and injected that back into the society as a whole.

But, at the end of the twentieth century, a new generation of “libertarian” populists and conservatives reversed that, and we saw instead a system installed by which money was taken from the middle and working classes and transferred to the vastly wealthy.

Cooper argues that we are in the next phase of that process. Now, the systems and institutions that were originally set up to protect American citizens and immigrants have themselves been reversed. In the American Government v.2, those systems are meant to coerce and control the population, not keep it safe.

Thus we come to a new and fascinating phase in American history. This will be remembered as the age in which our guardians become, instead, our guards…and our nation a prison.

He's A Robot

One thing I don’t understand is why no one among the tinfoil hat crew has come up with a particularly bonkers theory to explain why Trump the Candidate is so very different from Trump the President. Back in 2024, he was promising the moon and more to everyone. Lower prices. Jobs galore. The Middle Class protected. White people respected instead of mocked by full professors of Advanced Postmodernist Studies.

Now, in office, he’s done none of those things and is, in fact, taking measures that actively harm a good many of his supporters – for example, cutting back on affordable health care and imposing tariffs on industries that can’t afford them.

You would think, then, that the MAGA and the QAnon crew (not much difference between them) would be searching for an explanation. Yet, they haven’t seemed to come up with anything yet.

So, let me see if I can lend a hand. Now, what could we say? Ah, I’ve got it! Donald Trump has been removed. He has been replaced by a humanoid robot by Musk and his billionaire buddies. That works. Rather well in fact.

So, to all the MAGAnons out there, start spreading the news. Your hero has been replaced by an automation, as synthetic and soulless as a Visit With Abe Lincoln in Disneyland.

His Majesty Musk, First Shogun

Speaking of the Trump/Musk relationship, the power of the latter seems enormously more real than the power of the former. It does feel like a Monarch/Prime Minister relationship. Or, as I’ve said before, if you want to use a chess metaphor, then a stationary king and an all-powerful Queen.

Actually, I suppose we’ve been working toward that…at least with GOP presidents…for quite some time. Reagan, by the end of his term, was largely a symbolic figure, wheeled out to make pronouncements, and then wheeled back in to resume his nap. Real governing was done by the powers behind the throne. Similarly, George W. Bush was more a head of state than a head of government, and genuine power devolved to Dick Cheney. Now, with the second Trump Administration, we’ve gone all the way to golfer-in-chief (Trump) and a national Corporate CEO (Musk).

But I wonder how comfortable Trump should be with that. Yes, it gives him lots of time to work on his birdie, but the position of do-nothing-king is not a long term profession.

One will recall that shoguns and majordomos and others have the interesting habit of deposing and replacing their kings.

And sometimes removing a royal head in the process.

Like a (failing) business…

For decades, maybe for centuries, the American business elite has called for the American government to be run “like a business.” Well, by golly, in (powerless) President Trump and (all powerful) Prime Minister Musk, they’re finally getting their wish. They’ve got a Chief Executive who thinks like a CEO.

The kicker? A country isn’t a corporation. A corporation needs to think in quarters…three months is about as far out as it can see into the future. It needs to satisfy its stockholders and Wall Street, but not necessarily its “population,” i.e. employees. It doesn’t have citizens, each of whom have a vote and none of whose votes count more than others because they own more of the company. It can consider, if need be, going gracefully bankrupt.

None of that is true for a country.

There is thus a terrible possibility that running a country “like a business” is a disaster in the making and we will all suffer for it sometime soon.

If there is a straw to pluck at, maybe it is that after all is said, and we’re very lucky, the egotists of the corporate elite will be regarded with something less than adoration, and will never again be trusted to run the nation.

Will Business People Wake Up?

So by the time you read this, it may be out of date. However, last month, the online publication Semafor ran an article entitled, “American business leaders are turning on Trump — fast,” by

Liz Hoffman and Rohan Goswami. In it, Hoffman and Goswami reported on American business people becoming increasingly disillusioned by Trump and his ever more destructive impact on the economy.

True? False? Well, hard to say. These are the same people who heartily supported Trump on the theory that he would run the government “like a business.” It is hard to see them abandoning him now, just when he is acting most like a predatory raider conducting a hostile takeover.

Still, it would be interesting (and helpful) if they did wake up and notice that the Trump Administration is a total disaster causing no end of harm to no end of people.

But…the question remains. Even if they are convinced of Trump’s fundamental evil, will they do anything about it? I must confess, I kind of doubt it.

Fear and Loathing in Congress

So I gather that one of the reasons that GOP congressmen and -women have been so supportive of Donald Trump is that they fear retribution. By that, I don’t mean simply that they will be rebuked or punished by their party–not even the extreme form of party discipline handed out by, for example, the fictional character Francis Urquhart in Michael Dobbs's House of Cards trilogy–but rather actual physical violence.

At least according to an recent article in Vanity Fair, “‘They’re Scared Shitless’: The Threat of Political Violence Informing Trump’s Grip on Congress,” by Gabriel Sherman, Republican Congressmen have faced everything up to and including “credible death threats” from Trump’s more ardent followers if they fail to bend to the President’s will.

If this is true (and we do have to ask if that is the case), then it means we have entered a new and distressing period in American politics. We would have to ask if we still have a two party system, or rather one party and one political mafia that uses threats and intimidation to keep its minions in line.

And worse, it would be a mafia…

Without even the charisma and the cunning of Vito Corleone.

Mike Pence....hero?

There is something amazing in the fact that Mike Pence, of all people, is emerging as a hero…one of the few figures in the GOP actually willing to take on Trump and MAGA. I certainly wouldn’t have thought it back when he accepted the VP role in Trump’s first administration.

Admittedly, I don’t think he’ll be able to achieve much. His party is now too fully wedded to the oligarchy and to corruption to follow him. Yet, the mere fact that he is present is comforting. Something about better a single candle than cursing the darkness in the Republican soul.

This week's Xcargo: Biowar

 Hey, everyone,

So just to let you know, I post to my Xcargo column at least once a week, usually on Mondays, usually first thing in the morning. As you know, the new address is https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/blog

Yesteray's column was titled "biowar," and in it I asked if the Trump insurrection will be the first revolution in history to wage biological war against itself.

Check it out. It's both text and a video: https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/biowar

The Monster To Come - A Video

I'm still doing short videos for LiberalResistance.net. They're very political, and (as you would expect) very anti-Trump, so if you're very pro-Trump then probably not a good idea to watch.

But, still, if you're curious, here's what I'm doing with my voice-overs and a little stock footage. This one ran today, and I'll post others once every Friday or so for a while.

cheers
mjt

My most recent posts to Liberal Resistance

And lastly, there are my most recent posts to Liberal Resistance:

First, "Shinning Faces in the Gold Light," which is my response to the Neo-Nazi protests in Charlottesville:

Second, "A Most (Un)Civil War," in which I speculate on the commonalities between the mindset o the Antebellum slaveholders and our current lords and masters on the Right:

And third, "Houston and Ireland, Famine and Flood," in which I compare the British authorities who failed to act during the Great Famine, and our leadership, which seems so reluctant to respond to the floods in Houston...and perhaps for similar reasons.

check 'em out when you get a chance.

cheers

Some other places I'm posting...

Just fyi, in addition to XCargo, I'm currently posting to a couple of other places. Much of what you see here (at least the political material) will be subsequently posted as well to the DailyKos site, specifically here:

I'll also be posting to caucus99percent.com:

My particular handle there is mjat1957.

Lastly, there will be some other material, not included here, that I'll be posting to Liberal Resistance. You can see the main page here:

Though most of my material will be in the blog section, here:

So, stayed tuned. More to come!

Reading From the Book Of Giants

And so we come to the end of the world...

Well, maybe not really. Not the end, exactly. But you must confess, there is something a little apocalyptic about the scenes coming out of Houston right now.

And I’m going to write about that today. I’m going to get rather (sorry) Biblical on you. Or, at least, I’m going to use pseudo-Biblical language. And I’m going to reference the apocryphal book of Enoch.

For you see, I’m going to talk about floods, and Giants, and very, very wealthy men...

Who, it seems, if they could, would consume the world right down to the bedrock.

And never once consider they shouldn’t.

*

Background: for a variety of obscure reasons (obscure even to me, sometimes) I’ve always been interested in the various literatures which float around at the edges of religion—books and stories, that is, that arise from the same sources as do the major holy books of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but which are not themselves considered canonical. (And, by the way, I’m no scholar. I’m just reading these books out of curiosity. If you are a specialist in the field, feel free to write in with comments and corrections.)

Now, understand, I’m not particularly religious. I don’t treat these books as sacred texts. (I’m not sure I believe in sacred texts.) But, they can be rather fascinating, both as literature and history.

And, there are a bunch of such books about, actually. Jewish books, early Christian books, Gnostic books, and on and on. you’ll recall that a Gospel of Judas showed up back in the early 1980s, though the book itself supposedly dates from the late second century C.E. It relates the tale of Jesus from the perspective of a Judas himself, here presented as a hero who does what has to be done so that Christ’s mission will be complete. Needless to say, the book created rather a stir in certain circles.

But, right at the moment, the books which interest me the most are Enoch 1 and Enoch 2.

Enoch, of course, shows up briefly in Genesis as the prophet who “walks with God,” and ultimately vanishes into heaven. It’s almost just a cameo role, hardly worth mentioning, and Enoch might not be remembered at all if it hadn’t been for someone (or many someones) who sometime around 300 BCE adopted him as a major character in a whole series of tales (epics, really) in which his adventures in heaven are recounted in great detail.

For a variety of reasons, the books of Enoch almost completely disappeared in the West (both for Jews and Christians). But, fortunately, they survived elsewhere, for instance in the Ethiopian Bible.

Why I mention all of this is that Enoch...or rather, Enoch’s authors...also talk about the Great Flood that drowns out mankind for its “wickedness” in Genesis. But Enoch has a curious take on the whole story. In his version, where everything goes wrong is waaay back, sometime after the expulsion from Eden, when certain Angels looked upon “the daughters of men,” and, well, not to put too fine a point on it, got the hots.

They, these angels, descended to earth and got very busy with the ladies. Then, when they were done, the women in question had hybrid children, the Nephilim, or Giants, who unfortunately, did not take after the heavenly side of the family. Rather, they grew up to be monsters, brutish and evil, and wholly devoted to themselves.

In fact, the Giants ate everything. They consumed all they could find, utterly without restraint, eating the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, the fish of the sea...and, finally, humans. The world, indeed, was stripped bare, as we read in Chapter 7 of 1 Enoch:

And the women conceiving brought forth giants,

Whose stature was each three hundred cubits. These devoured all which the labour of men produced; until it became impossible to feed them;

When they turned themselves against men, in order to devour them;

And began to injure birds, beasts, reptiles, and fishes, to eat their flesh one after another, and to drink their blood.

Then the earth reproved the unrighteous.

Finally, things got so bad, that heaven had to respond or else all life on earth would perish. So, the Great Flood was sent, and the giants vanished under its waves.

*

There’s lots of other really great lines in the book. For instance, at one point, the humans who are being cannibalized by the Giants appeal to heaven, “And men, being destroyed, cried out; and their voice reached to heaven” (1 Enoch 8: 9), and what may be my very favorite line is in Chapter 9, and involves the earth herself seeking redress, “The earth deprived of her children has cried even to the gate of heaven,” (1 Enoch 9: 2).

I’ve always been interested in Enoch’s interpretation of the Flood because it sort of says that it wasn’t humans who’d sinned, and who were getting exterminated, but rather the Giants, who never learned empathy, never learned to control their appetites, and never discovered the virtues of self-restraint.

That’s rather more satisfying, don’t you think, than the more usual view of things, where we are ourselves the villains? And Enoch gives us a God who is our avenger rather than our destroyer, which is comforting.

But...also...doesn’t it sound just a bit familiar?

Doesn’t it sound, just a little, like the run up to Houston?

*

We’re learning, now, that when Harvey hit Houston, it may have encountered a city uniquely vulnerable. It appears—at least from what I’m reading in the papers and on the Web—that some city authorities, some city planners, and some real estate developers had been told repeatedly that there were dangers in the way they were building and where they were building. It seems that they had been informed that constructing homes and stores over wetlands, and in areas that might have taken run-off during storms, was to court disaster. But, or so I’m reading, they did not change their behavior. It was easier, more profitable for them, to just keep doing what they were doing.

I’m reading, too, that Harvey himself was a bit of a surprise to some authorities, both in Texas and elsewhere, because it was a super-storm, a storm of almost unbelievable power. Again, they had been warned that such storms were coming, and more will come, because the world is warming, and the consequences of that will include ever more, and ever more potent hurricanes. Indeed, if they’d ever doubted it, they could have simply looked at recent history—Katrina, Sandy, and now Harvey.

Yet, they were surprised anyway. Why? Maybe because they were busy telling themselves (or, at least, telling the rest of us) that global warming was a “Hoax,” “Junk Science,” and “a Liberal conspiracy hatched by the Chinese to cripple our economy.” Or, to put it another way, it was in their interest to deny the facts.

Moreover...and here’s the really scary one...we are discovering, too, that this will probably not be the end of it. We are finding that the Great and the Powerful will almost certainly not learn from Harvey...just as they didn’t learn from Katrina and Sandy. As I write this, I am already starting to see comments in certain quarters about how Harvey really wasn’t the result of climate change, and how it wasn’t anyone’s fault that Houston is underwater, and how, really, government relief and/or regulation would be a mistake, and we ought to just sit back and let corporations and Free Enterprise get on with their high and holy business.

Or, again to put it all another way, those of us who are not rich and powerful, should know our place, not interfere, and wait quietly while storm, and flood, and fire, and desert...grow closer every day.

*

In short, the Rich and the Powerful, the 1%, the Billionaire Boys Club, whatever you want to call it...in Houston and elsewhere...had no intention then, and has no intention now of hearing calls for restraint. They will drill, and they will extract, and they will mine, and they will burn, and they pollute as much they like, thank you very much. And if we object, well, tough shit for us.

Their will to power is unbounded, their capacity for consumption unlimited, and their hunger is (alas) insatiable.

By now, I am sure, you see the link...my none-too-subtle metaphor, the connection between the Giants who consumed the very earth itself, and our own Power Elite...who, like Giants, have no interest in self-restraint.

Which is...disturbing.

Thus, I hope there is, out there, somewhere...maybe you who read this...an Enoch, who will have the talent and the prophetic power necessary to confront our Giants, and help them understand that restraint and self-control are absolutely necessary for our survival—theirs as well as ours, for not even Giants are tall enough to stand above the Flood which may be coming.

Or, if there is not an Enoch...

Then let us pray...or, if you do not pray, then devoutly hope...that there is at least a Noah, and an Ark big enough to carry birds, and beasts, and ourselves away...

From the children of rebel angels...whose appetites were such that they devoured all, until, at last, and in anguish, the earth deprived of her children cried even to the gate of heaven.

And heaven’s fury may well be...

Brutal, beyond our power to imagine.
