Letter From A Wise Woman

Today a guest offers some important thoughts on the current attempt by Those Who Know Best (they're so sure they do) to force Joe Biden to withdraw from the race. The guest is my own dear wife, Martha Tucker, and she has some important things to say. In this, a reduced version of a letter she sent out to all her friends and readers, she quotes from an article by Robert Hubble, who in turn quotes from a piece in the Guardian on "Why Is The Pundit Class so desperate to push Biden out of the race?"

Dear all,

The entire article can be found here:  https://roberthubbell.substack.com/p/person-woman-man-camera-tv-double. I've excerpted Rebecca Solnik quoted material, because I'm not sure you can get into the full link, which is a subscription. Hubble writes:

And, finally, Rebecca Solnit wrote what I wish I had written. See her essay in The Guardian: Why is the pundit class so desperate to push Biden out of the race?

Solnit begins:

I am not usually one to offer diagnoses of people I’ve never met, but it does seem like the pundit class of the American media is suffering from severe memory loss. Because they’re doing exactly what they did in the 2016 presidential race – providing wildly asymmetrical and inflammatory coverage of the one candidate running against Donald J Trump.

They have become a stampeding herd producing an avalanche of stories suggesting Biden is unfit, will lose and should go away, at a point in the campaign in which replacing him would likely be somewhere between extremely difficult and utterly catastrophic.

They do this while ignoring something every scholar and critic of journalism knows well and every journalist should. As Nikole Hannah-Jones put it: “As media we consistently proclaim that we are just reporting the news when in fact we are driving it. What we cover, how we cover it, determines often what Americans think is important and how they perceive these issues yet we keep pretending it’s not so.” They are not reporting that he is a loser; they are making him one.

And so it goes with what appears to be a journalistic competition to outdo each other in the aggressiveness of the attacks and the unreality of the proposals. It’s a dogpile and a panic, and there is no one more unable to understand their own emotional life, biases and motives than people who are utterly convinced of their own ironclad rationality and objectivity, [also known as] pundits.

Here's my advice to everyone—regardless of what side of the issue you take regarding Joe Biden’s continued candidacy. The issue is Trump, not Biden. Whether Biden drops out is not something you or I have control over. (Readers frequently write to me and say, “Please tell Joe Biden . . . .” The only thing Joe Biden knows about me is my credit card number.)

Joe Biden has control over his choices; his close advisors and family have influence; some senior leaders in the Democratic Party have some influence. They are talking amongst themselves. Let them have a rational, private conversation not played out on the front pages of the NYTimes and WaPo minutes after the latest exchange of views.

However, the one institution that has demonstrated it cannot be trusted to deal with this question is the media. They have a perverse financial incentive: Chaos = profit. They are agents of chaos at this moment in pursuit of the mighty dollar.

I believe that Joe Biden is the best candidate to defeat Trump, that replacing him at this point poses unacknowledged and unknowable risks, and that those who advocate a different path have the burden of identifying and funding an alternative candidate.

Our task has not changed. It is our moral and patriotic duty to alert all Americans about the threat posed by Trump and his fascist plan to undermine democracy. We have plenty of work and precious little time left to accomplish our task.

Let us channel all our energy away from debating Joe Biden’s age and health into defeating Trump. In that task, we must speak with one voice.

This title is  the question of the day, I think, with the most lucid comments I've seen to date. The frenzy to ditch Biden is most disturbing, especially I think because it seems to lead directly into electing Trump unless he is somehow (most likely not) disqualified.

Seemingly, the pundits are not too swift: how exactly do they propose to put the consequences of such an oust into operation in 4 months (or less if they wait until the August convention), choose a candidate (that would make an interesting bloodbath), drag the individuals out of their substantial responsibilities in the government, restructure the entire campaign structure, fund the candidate, foster confidence in the public that they know what they're doing, prep the candidate for both domestic & foreign issues sufficient to debate Trump and speak at rallies & town halls with adequate skills, details, and some bit of charm & charisma? (I know, I'm vying for the longest sentence to enter into the Guiness Book of World records (even though it's not a run-on) but desperate times call for intensive measures).

In my view, Biden is the man, the only individual who has the stature, experience, credibilty, and the ability to talk Trump under the table (admittedly he was off his game at the debate) to pull off the election. He has made his mistakes, like any other president, but he has accomplished a great deal and is being treated with so much disrespect while Trump gets a pass from most of the media. What's wrong with this picture??

The Times, the Atlantic, and numerous other publications and congresspeople are playing an insane game of "Name that Candidate" without considering the outcome, not even recognizing the enormous, perhaps impossible effect to pull off the success of another candidate. They're beginning to look like the Republicans ousting Kevin McCarthy. I think they need to stop playing this game of killer chess and figure out how they can report and discuss Biden's accomplishment and policies, his vast experience, his lack of criminal convictions and suits rather than trying to manipulate the choice without acknowledging the potential chaos that will ensue if we follow their blithe advice.

I know I don't usually write polemics, but I'm very distressed with this situation and the fact that our three areas of government seem to be crumbling before our eyes. We are in dangerous times, as you all are aware. So, with my apologies for ranting, please consider these ideas and do all that you are willing and able to do to see that Trump does not take our freedoms away.

All the best,

Martha

Irresponsible Adults

Here’s the situation. If Trump gets back into the White House, we’re in deep trouble. That’s inescapable. We either vote blue or endure fascism.

We also only have a short time between now and November. The only candidate who already has the necessary organization in place, who has the volunteers, who has the funding, and most of all, who has the name recognition to win against Trump is Joe Biden. That is a simple fact.

Yet, some powerful people in the Democratic Party, and in the media, called for Biden to step down. Given the reality of the situation, this is a perfect blue print for defeat.

When I was a boy, I remember my father talking about “irresponsibility” and the Vietnam war. He was no fan of the war, but he became incensed when critics would suggest that the war was being mis-managed (which it was, admittedly) and then demanded that the military do everything differently. They had, of course, some elaborate plan that was to be put in place.

But the reality was that such vast changes in strategy and tactics could only be managed with enormous effort. While the changes were underway, the other side would have simply won without breaking a sweat.

Thus the critics’ were irresponsible.

And I fear that’s exactly what Biden’s critics are at the moment--irresponsible. They are calling for changes which cannot be made without losing the war entirely.

That’s something to be thought about after the election if Biden wins.

If he doesn’t win, it will be because of these same Elites and Pundits, and our only consolation is that under a Fascist dictatorship,  they will be the first into the camps, and in front of the firing squads.

It awaits them.

From The People Who Brought You Pearl Harbor

I really admire Hillary Clinton, and I voted for her in 2016. But I also knew that she was greatly disliked by many Americans, and I feared for the worst when she was made the nominee.

And, of course, the worst happened. It happened because the leadership decided she should be president, regardless of her actual electability, and they imposed her on the ticket in spite of, not because of what the voters wanted (which seems to have been Bernie Sanders). And, so, what we also got was Donald Trump, four years of chaos, Covid, and a very near economic disaster.

But I think we now have a very similar situation on our hands. When Democratic elites, media members, and various pundits demanded Biden step down, they were effectively stating that their opinion about who should be president was more important than what voters believed -- and voters repeatedly said that they were sticking with Biden, regardless.

I think, then, that we need to look very hard at this situation. And we need to ask, in future, if the Party’s leadership needs to be shaken up a bit.

And maybe reconstructed entirely.

A pompous ass...

They Just Don’t Get It.

I read an article a while back on the recent attempt by some “high ranking” Democrats to replace Joe Biden with someone younger and “more with it.” The article made the interesting point that the move was coming from “Democratic elites and nonpartisan pundits.”*

The problem being, of course, that’s not who votes. Who votes is people, not pundits and not elites. And if either group had bothered to actually ask anyone who lives outside the Beltway or where-ever, they would have discovered that there was absolutely no support for the dangerous and probably suicidal move of switching horses in mid-stream, or given our present circumstances, in mid-tidal wave.

The fact that they would suggest such an idea without bothering to discover whether there was any support for it, says a great deal about our Elites...and little that is flattering.

Perhaps we need to ask if the Democratic party really needs leadership of that sort. Of, in other words, Democrats who are so un-democratic.

A member of the party elite...a.k.a., a pompous ass.

Those Who Know Best...don’t.

What fascinates me about the recent attempt to force Biden out for someone else...someone “more fit”...is that effort seems to be coming entirely from Democratic Party insiders and potent pundits of several sorts. It does not seem to be coming from, or even be supported, by most ordinary voters.

In other words, it is an effort by Elites to remove a candidate who has been a bit too plebeian for them. That is amazing. And it makes one realize that the Democratic leadership is dangerously removed from the ordinary voters who do not live inside the Beltway, or in certain enclaves on the coasts.

Which also may explain how Donald Trump got elected in the first place.

After November, when Biden is (please God) safely in the White House for another four years, we will need to consider that fact. And perhaps plan action.

They're just so sure they know best.

Happy Fourth

Before I get started blogging, I thought I'd share this. It's also on my regular blog (at https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/happy-fourth-of-july) but I thought I'd share it here.

This is a dark and dangerous, but let's at least celebrate the events, and the people, who made America a nation, and one with aspirations of Democracy at that.

Okay, I'm back

 Hi, Everyone,

So, as you know, I do most of my blogging now at michaeljaytucker.com. But I feel the need to something a bit more political. So, at least through the end of this year, I'll posting here as well.

Stay tuned.

My most recent Xcargo postings

My Candles At Work

Hey Everyone!

There's been a lot o' stuff happening in my life, and so, alas, I've not be posting here as much as I should.

Anyway, here's what's been on my blog the last few weeks:

Dec 13, "The Art Of The Wax," https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/the-art-of-the-wax

So, as you know, I’m in the middle of one of my infamous multipart series, this one on making candles, which is the hobby I sort of picked up during lockdown and I was bored to the proverbial tears. Or even tears without proverbs. Which is worse, I’m sure. ‘Cause you know what they say. A rolling English major gathers no moss when there’s a dog in the apple a day and it’s always late than better.

I’m sure they say that. Heard it a million times.

Okay, today’s the day I’m going to talk about working with wax.

Which is really kinda…strangely enough…a lot of fun.

And sort of artistic.

Dec 20, "Wax, Wicks, And Shapes," https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/wax-wicks-and-shapes

Okay, last time I talked about doing color and wax and candles. Today, I’m going to talk about shapes and wax.

It’s gonna be fascinating, I’m sure.

Okay, maybe I’m not sure…but, heck, we can all pretend, can’t we?

Dec 27, "Merry (belated) Christmas," https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/merry-belated-christmas

So this is just a belated Happy Holidays message. I wasn’t able to post before now because, as you know if you read my social media, I became a grandfather for the second time last week. We’ve been down visiting the kids and their kids in Austin over the last few days.

Anyway, I wanted to announce the birth of Miles Tillman Tucker, who joins his big, three-year-old sister Hazel Muir Tucker, on the planet Earth as of December 21, 2021.

Jan 1, "Happy New Year!" https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/happy-new-year

Happy 2022 everyone! Have a great time tonight, but be safe! No drinking and driving, and avoid Covid. I haven't got that many friends, and I sure as heck don't want to lose any of you!

Jan 3, "Okay, I Can’t Help It. I’m A Political Animal," https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/okay-i-can-t-help-it-i-m-a-political-animal

Yes folks, I tried to lay off politics in my personal blog. But, alas, I just can't help it. I'm a political animal.

Stay tuned! More to come!

Fire Safety While Working With Candles

Here's my most recent blog posting. It's on fire safety if you're working with wax. And, believe me, if you have any plans to make candles, you need to be careful.

Football, Sports, High School…My Fury

We don't need more of these...

This week's blog posting. It's all about how furious I am that schools are using windfall Covid funds from the government to pay for...more sports. Not education. Sports.

Argh.

QAnon Fatherhood…and lack thereof

The horror of it ...

This one ran today (Oct 28 2021) and deals with an incredibly tragic situation. It is the story of a young man, a Parkland school shooting survivor, whose own father became a QAnon cultist and now believes that the boy is part of a "False Flag" operation.

It is, as I say, fantastically tragic, and says much about QAnon in all its horror.

Sonnet 39

This ran on Oct 18, 2021, and was in homage to my beloved Martha. That was her birthday. And she will always be the Lady of the Sonnet to me....

What Day Is This?

Is this their day?

This appeared on Oct 11, 2021, and is my reaction to the Columbus Day. Or is it Indigenous Peoples' Day? Well...

Today is either Columbus Day, or Indigenous Peoples’ Day, or just old Monday, depending on which calendar you read, and which politics you happen to embrace.

Should I explain that? Probably not. Probably nobody in North America doesn’t get it. But, just on the off chance…

Giordano Bruno: Part 2

The trial of Giordano Bruno. This is a bronze relief done by the artist Ettore Ferrari (1845-1929). Source: Wikipedia

This the second part of my piece on Giordano Bruno and his meaning today. It ran on Oct 7, 2021

When they took Bruno to his execution, they fastened his tongue with a wooden vice so that he couldn’t speak.

Thus, even in the spare few moments before his death, as he traveled his last mile…

They feared not his actions…

But his words.

Homage to Giordano…and vaccines

My blog posting from Sep 30, 2021

Three seemingly unrelated facts:

First, the least important fact (well, important to me, but maybe not to others): my birthday is February 17.

Much more important, on February 17, 1600, the philosopher and scientist Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for a variety of intellectual “crimes.”

And, finally, on July 25, 2021, at a mass rally in London attended by “thousands” of anti-vaccine militants, British conspiracy theorist Kate Shemirani told the crowd that soon doctors and nurses promoting the anti-Covid vaccine would be tried like Nazi-era war criminals, and “hung” (sic) as a consequence.

And I’m afraid.

Depth Charges!

My current personal blog posting is a Depth Charges...the lowest form of Explosive-Cargo!

This week I talk about getting violently hung-over, learning to hate cicadas, not quite getting Covid, and...and...and...

Never ever being even remotely as cool as my old Dad.

Sigh.

Bell, Book, and Candles…

So this was my blog posting for yesterday, Monday, Sep 20, 2021. It was the second in my ongoing and very weird series about making candles. Badly.

Very enlightening.

HA. Get it? Enlightening. Light. Candles. Hee.

Oh, never mind.

Anyway, give it a read...

Sorry, gentlemen. She's not really in the text.

Better To Light A Single Candle…so long as it isn’t one of mine

So here's my blog posting for the day. It's all about how I came make candles...

Really lousy candles...

And that's just the beginning...

Sample text from same:

No. Really. Candles. You know. The wax things. That burn. “And oh what a lovely light…” Except mine sometimes don’t burn and often look like a sand clod with a side order of buffalo chip. But we won’t go into that. It’s far too horrible.

Because right now we all need more happy kids with giraffes in our lives...

This is my column for the day. It's all about how I'm going to be writing more about happy stuff and less about grim stuff. Because, well, we're all tired of politics...aren't we?

This week's Xcargo: Biowar

 Hey, everyone,

So just to let you know, I post to my Xcargo column at least once a week, usually on Mondays, usually first thing in the morning. As you know, the new address is https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/blog

Yesteray's column was titled "biowar," and in it I asked if the Trump insurrection will be the first revolution in history to wage biological war against itself.

Check it out. It's both text and a video: https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/post/biowar

 Covid's no joke. Get vaccinated!

Just a quick reminder...don't be stranger now that you know the way :-)

 Hello, Everyone!

So just about a year ago (on 5 July, 2020, to be precise) I announced that I was moving this blog, explosive-cargo, to my own webpage. You can see the page here, MichaelJayTucker.com and you can see the new version of explosive-cargo here, https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/blog

Well, I’m not moving the blog back here. Heck, I had enough problems just getting everything packed up and schlepped last time :-)

But, I did realize that maybe I could post some pointers to what I’m writing about here, just in case anyone hasn’t followed me over to my address. So, I’m going to start doing that!

Which is all another way of saying, Stay Tuned, Everyone. Lot’s more coming!

Happy Birthday, America

Well, everyone, like it says, Happy Birthday to America on this Fourth of July.  May the nation know many long and happy centuries to come.

I am quite serious about that. I am, in my own way, an American nationalist. I believe that who we are, as a country, something good, and important. Yes, I suppose, on some weird level, I evn believe in American exceptionalism.

And I hope, truly, that we will soon exit this time of troubles, and that under another president, and with a different Congress, we will find our way forward, to greater wisdom, greater achievement, and greater happiness.

*

One quick note. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be moving this blog to my own website, which is MichaelJayTucker.com. Very shortly, explosive-cargo will be here: https://www.michaeljaytucker.com/blog. So, do check it out.

cheers

Putin’s Bounty Hunters

So now we learn that Russia was offering bounties for the lives of American soldiers. We also learn, or at least strongly suspect, that Trump knew about this from the beginning, and he either didn’t care, or didn’t notice when the information was presented to him in a national security brief.

In other words, holy crap.

I keep thinking, each time Trump does something incredibly stupid or fascistic that, “Right, here it is, he can’t keep going, this is the end...”

But, then, somehow, his supporters find a way around it. They decide that it is Fake News, or a Liberal Hoax, or, well, fill in the blank.

It is astonishing. It is amazing. It is an exercise in willful disbelief that is truly one for the ages. You have to stand in awe at their capacity for not believing the obvious.

But, then, why should I be surprised? They have so far managed to overlook the deaths of over 126,000 Americans from Covid-19 (as of this date), which Trump continues to downplay or ignore. Why should a little thing like the murder of Americans in uniform penetrate the concrete?

So...what will make them sit up and take notice? What will make them wonder if, after all, their hero is actually leading them to their destruction?

Maybe nothing. Maybe they will not notice...not even when they have entered the abattoir, and are marching with smiling faces (but not masks!) to the blade itself, and never even noticing when it enters the flesh and begins the grisly business...

Of the slaughter.
